Install and sign in
The browser extension is what protects you. It checks your prompts on AI websites before they’re sent. This page shows how to install it, sign in, and confirm that it’s working.
Before you start
- Your admin must have activated your account. You know it’s done when you get the email Welcome to Sanitized AI: your account is ready. If your organization creates accounts through its company sign-in, you might not get this email: you can sign in right away.
- If your IT team manages your computer, the extension may already be installed for you. Look for the Sanitized AI icon in your browser’s toolbar or extensions menu, and skip to Sign in. If you can’t find it, contact your IT team.
Install the extension
- Open the Sanitized AI extension in the Chrome Web Store.
- Click Add to Chrome (in Brave, Add to Brave), and then click Add extension.
- To keep the icon visible, click the Extensions icon in the toolbar, and then click the pin next to Sanitized AI Extension.
- Open the Sanitized AI extension in Microsoft Edge Add-ons.
- Click Get, and then click Add extension.
- To keep the icon visible, click the Extensions icon in the toolbar, and then click Show in toolbar next to Sanitized AI Extension.
- Open the Sanitized AI extension in Firefox Add-ons. You need Firefox 140 or later.
- Click Add to Firefox. Firefox lists the permissions and data the extension uses. Click Add to approve them. If Firefox also asks about optional technical data, sharing it lets your organization see that the extension is installed.
- To keep the icon visible, click the Extensions button in the toolbar, open the menu next to Sanitized AI Extension, and then click Pin to Toolbar.
When you install it, your browser asks to let the extension read and change data on a list of websites, mostly AI tools. That’s how it checks prompts on those sites. The extension doesn’t run on other websites.
-
Click the Sanitized AI icon in your toolbar.
-
In Work email, enter your work email address, and then click Continue. The window shows the name of your organization.
-
Choose how to sign in. You only see the options your organization allows.
- Email me a sign-in link: Sanitized AI emails you a link. Open the email Your Sanitized AI sign-in link in the same browser where you installed the extension, and click Sign in to Sanitized AI. A page confirms Your browser extension is signed in. Close that tab.
- Google, Microsoft, or Okta: a sign-in window opens. Sign in with your company account as you usually do. In Firefox, a window titled Finish signing in to the browser extension opens first; click the button in it to continue. The window closes when you’re done.
-
Click the Sanitized AI icon again. The first time, a You’re protected screen appears. Click Got it.
Check that you’re protected
- Go to an AI website your organization protects, such as ChatGPT.
- Type a prompt with a made-up name and phone number, such as Call Jane Doe at (514) 555-0134, and send it.
A Security Check should appear before the prompt is sent. If it doesn’t, see Troubleshooting.
What the extension shows
The toolbar icon
- Grey: you’re signed out and not protected.
- In colour: you’re signed in.
- In colour with a green dot: you’re signed in and the website in this tab is protected.
The extension window
When you click the icon while signed in, you see:
- Protection activated at the top.
- My Stats: your own activity. Switch between 30D and Lifetime.
- Flagged: warnings you closed without sending.
- Overridden: prompts you sent with Send Anyway.
- Re-edited: prompts you changed yourself, or files you removed.
- Sanitized: prompts you sent after Sanitize Prompt.
- In Lifetime view, Risk level replaces Re-edited, and Top guardrails lists the rules that flag you most.
- At the bottom: your email, a light and dark theme button, the EN and FR language switch, and Sign out.
Change the language
Click EN or FR in the extension window. The warnings on AI websites switch too. When you’re signed in, your choice is saved to your account, so your emails and the web dashboard use it as well.
Sign out
In the extension window, click Sign out. The icon turns grey, and you don’t see warnings until you sign in again. If your IT team manages your computer, the extension can still record activity while you’re signed out.
Private and incognito windows
Browsers turn extensions off in private windows unless you allow them. To be protected in private windows too:
- Chrome or Brave: go to
chrome://extensions, click Details under Sanitized AI Extension, and turn on Allow in Incognito. - Edge: go to
edge://extensions, click Details under Sanitized AI Extension, and select Allow in InPrivate. - Firefox: go to
about:addons, click Sanitized AI Extension, and set Run in Private Windows to Allow.
Your organization might require this. Check your AI usage policy.
